AdHoc Studio’s superhero workplace comedy Dispatch has now been played by more than 5 million people. To mark its first anniversary, the studio is releasing a free update with two behind-the-scenes modes for Deluxe Edition owners, and the game will come to iOS and Android on December 9, according to Polygon and GameSpot.
The update is available now. Commentary mode offers more than 16 hours of material split into separate cast and crew tracks, and the cast track includes Aaron Paul, Laura Bailey and Erin Yvette. Which commentary you hear depends on the story choices you make. Storyboard mode lets you play through the whole game as its original storyboard animatics, showing how its scenes and performances were put together. The two modes can be used together, so the commentary plays over the storyboards. Polygon reports that both are part of the Deluxe Edition and that Standard Edition owners can upgrade for $10.99.
“In our industry, it’s often really hard to showcase those people and how the development process actually works,” co-creative director Nick Herman said in a press release quoted by both outlets.
AdHoc says the mobile version was rebuilt for touch controls and vertical play. Polygon adds that it supports Google Play Games on PC. The first four episodes will be free at launch, and Polygon gives the price of the full game as $19.99.
The anniversary plans also include merchandise. There will be new apparel, signed posters and physical editions of the four comics that came digitally with the Deluxe Edition. Dispatch: Design Works, a hardcover book and collectible box made with Lost in Cult, will cover the game’s development, and Lost in Cult also sells the soundtrack on vinyl. A one-night concert called Dispatch: Night Shift is set for December 3 at Avalon Hollywood in Los Angeles. According to Polygon, composer Andrew Arcadi and the SDN Company Band will perform, and AdHoc Studio email subscribers will get first access to a very limited number of tickets.
Dispatch stars Robert Robertson III, a former superhero known as Mecha Man, who becomes a dispatcher at the Superhero Dispatch Network. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, AdHoc CEO Michael Choung said the studio would “definitely” use episodic releases again. He also said it is interested in film and TV adaptations and plans to announce its next project soon.
