Ace Combat Zero to get standalone Steam app, separate from 136GB Ace Combat 8 install

The pre-order bonus currently can't be downloaded without the full Ace Combat 8 install, which drew negative Steam reviews. The split also adds Steam Cloud saves.

Bandai Namco says Ace Combat Zero will become its own application on Steam. Right now, the PC version can only be played through the 136GB Ace Combat 8 install. PC Gamer reports that the publisher posted the announcement on the game’s Steam page on Tuesday.

Ace Combat Zero was a free pre-order bonus for Ace Combat 8. According to PC Gamer, Bandai Namco put it inside the newer game’s launcher. That means anyone who wants the 3.2GB port of the 2006 PS2 game has to download all of Ace Combat 8 as well. PC Gamer says this decision caused most of the negative user reviews Ace Combat 8 received on launch day.

In its Steam post, Bandai Namco said Zero “will be made available as a standalone application on Steam.” The standalone version is currently in “final quality assurance and compatibility testing,” according to the post.

Who can play the game isn’t changing. PC Gamer notes that Zero still won’t be sold on its own. Only players who pre-ordered Ace Combat 8 will have it in their Steam libraries. Once the split happens, those owners can download and launch Zero without installing the larger game.

PC Gamer also reports that the standalone version will support Steam Cloud saves. Comments on the Steam post have been mostly positive, according to the outlet, but many players are asking Bandai Namco to add achievements to Zero, since the console release had them. Bandai Namco has not said whether it will add them.

Bandai Namco has not given a date for the standalone release.
