Fishlabs lays off development and support staff, citing changing project requirements

The Plaion-owned studio has not said how many people are affected. It is the studio's first round of cuts since Embracer's 2023 restructuring eliminated 50 roles there.

German developer Fishlabs has announced layoffs that affect both its development and support teams, GamesIndustry.biz reported on October 16. The studio has not said how many employees are losing their jobs.

In its statement, Fishlabs said the decision came from “changing project requirements and the needs of our clients and internal teams.” The studio said the cuts do not reflect the talent or performance of the people leaving, and that it plans to support them as they move on. It also said it will keep working on its partner projects, though it did not name them.

For today, however, our priority is supporting the colleagues and friends who are leaving us.

According to GamesIndustry.biz, the studio’s last job cuts came in 2023, when it eliminated 50 roles during Embracer Group’s restructuring program. Fishlabs is owned by Plaion, which is part of Embracer’s portfolio.

Michael Schade and Christian Lohr founded Fishlabs in 2004. Plaion, then called Koch Media, bought the studio in 2013. That deal came after Fishlabs filed for the equivalent of bankruptcy, a process that cost 25 people their jobs. Schade and Lohr left soon afterward and started Rockfish Games, the developer of Everspace, in 2014. GamesIndustry.biz notes that Rockfish received €8 million earlier this year from the German government’s expanded €125 million games fund for the next game in the Everspace series.
