Velocity Unbound launched on PC with a shader stutter problem that made the first lap of every district hitch noticeably. Apex Torque’s patch 1.0.2 adds a shader precompilation step on first launch, and after retesting on three systems I can confirm it fixes the worst of it. What remains is a well-optimized racer with a few expensive settings worth knowing about.
Our test systems
- Entry level: a six-core desktop processor, 16GB of RAM, and a graphics card with 8GB of video memory, at 1080p.
- Mid-range: an eight-core processor, 32GB of RAM, and a 12GB graphics card, at 1440p.
- High end: a twelve-core processor, 32GB of RAM, and a 16GB graphics card, at 4K.
On the mid-range system at 1440p and the High preset, the game averaged 94fps on our Harborline benchmark lap, with 1 percent lows of 71fps after the patch, up from 38fps before it. The entry-level system held 70–80fps at 1080p on Medium, and the high-end system averaged 88fps at 4K on Ultra with upscaling set to Quality.
Settings ranked by performance cost
- Reflections: the most expensive setting by far. Dropping from Ultra to High gained 18 percent on the mid-range system, and the difference is only visible on wet roads at night.
- Crowd and traffic density: 9–12 percent between High and Medium, mostly on the processor. Worth lowering on six-core chips.
- Volumetric fog: 7 percent from Ultra to High. Night Shift weather events lean on it heavily.
- Shadow quality: about 5 percent per step. Keep it at High or above; lower settings cause visible shimmer on trackside barriers.
- Texture quality: no performance cost unless you exceed your video memory. Ultra needs around 10GB at 1440p.
Two smaller notes: with the frame-rate cap enabled, the slipstream particle effect still updates only 60 times per second, which Apex Torque says is a known issue, and ultrawide support now works correctly after 1.0.2 fixed the stretched race HUD. Overall, Velocity Unbound is now one of the better-running PC releases of the season.
