Unknown Worlds is getting Subnautica 2 ready for the next stage of early access. Creative director Anthony Gallegos described the update, which the studio calls Early Access 2.0, in the first episode of a new developer vlog series. According to PC Gamer, the studio considers it the game’s biggest update since early access began last May.
Gallegos said the update, which the team shortens to EA 2, will add a complete new playable region made up of several biomes. It will also bring a substantial amount of new story content about the colonists of the ship Cicada and the game’s other beings, as well as new creatures.
The new region is meant to be unsettling. Gallegos called it “one of our scariest regions we’ve ever done” and added: “It’s dark, it’s threatening, and it’s really beautiful at the same time.”
Unknown Worlds is also changing how the Collector Leviathan behaves to make the creature more frightening. PC Gamer notes that the studio did not say what the changes involve.
The update also includes several gameplay changes:
- New gadgets and new biomods.
- A frog chassis for the Tadpole vehicle, which gives it arms and legs.
- Dash becomes a built-in ability on the player’s fins and no longer takes up a biomod slot, so players don’t have to give up another active biomod to have it.
Unknown Worlds has not given a release date for Early Access 2.0.
