Jagex has canceled RuneScape Reignited, according to PC Gamer and Rock Paper Shotgun. Jagex had revealed the plan less than two weeks earlier, and it drew complaints from the RuneScape community. A Jagex blog post from associate creative director Ryan Philpott, known in the game as Mod Ryan, announced the decision.
Jagex revealed Reignited at Runefest earlier this month, along with a fourth version of the MMO currently called RuneScape 4, Rock Paper Shotgun reports. Reignited was meant to let new and lapsed players start over on their own servers, using a new character type with its own economy. According to PC Gamer, players complained that it could split the community, that it limited how characters could interact, and that it required a separate subscription.
A few days after the announcement, Jagex apologized to veteran players who felt pushed aside and said it was looking at major revisions. It later shared a list of planned changes and asked for more feedback. In the cancellation post, Philpott wrote: “It is clear that we missed the mark on this, and so we are not moving forward with it.” The post also pointed back to an earlier mistake: Jagex said that the last time it ignored player feedback, the game’s combat was changed for good, and the studio needed more than a decade to recover.
Reignited had been scheduled to launch on December 2. Rock Paper Shotgun reports that Jagex will instead release the Adventure Guide and the first part of the Remastered Journey on that date, along with other improvements. A 10-day free trial will also run from December 2 to 12. During the trial, new characters and characters that have not had an active membership since June 2 will be able to access Members worlds and content. PC Gamer reports that the game’s 2027 roadmap is unchanged.
PC Gamer notes that Jagex has changed course after player backlash before. It dropped a planned battle pass in 2023 and removed its Treasure Hunter microtransactions in 2025.
