Resident Evil Requiem is the best-selling new PS5 game of 2026 by physical copies, with an estimated 1.3 million units, according to Alinea Analytics data reported by GameSpot. The firm estimates that digital currently accounts for about 70% of sales and physical for 30%.
Alinea head of market analysis Rhys Elliott said the top physical sellers among this year’s new PlayStation releases are mostly single-player AAA games. According to the estimates, Capcom’s game is the only one on the list past 1 million units. The rest of the top eight:
- 007 First Light: 873,000
- Marvel’s Wolverine: 799,000
- EA Sports FC 27: 705,000
- Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced: 613,000
- Crimson Desert: 511,000
- Pragmata: 442,000
- Onimusha: Way of the Sword: 423,000
Elliott said PlayStation first-party games and games aimed at Japan tend to sell more physical copies. Physical copies made up 44.0% of Pragmata sales and 44.1% of Onimusha: Way of the Sword sales, which Alinea credits to Capcom’s home market. Alinea estimates Japan accounts for 12% of Onimusha copies sold on PlayStation and 11% of Pragmata copies. Elliott wrote that Japanese consumers “still have a penchant for physical copies, more so than any Western market.” GameSpot reports that Silent Hill: Townfall, Beast of Reincarnation, Yakuza Kiwami 3 and the Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly remake have also split roughly evenly between physical and digital in Japan.
Sports games are a different story. Five of the top 10 new PlayStation games of 2026 by revenue are sports titles, according to Alinea. Only 8.9% of EA Sports FC 27 copies sold this year were physical. Sales of NBA 2K27, Madden 27, College Football 27 and MLB The Show 26 also leaned heavily digital.
The data comes after the backlash over Sony’s move away from physical games on PlayStation. Elliott does not expect the shift to cost PlayStation much revenue: some players will leave, he said, but most will switch to digital. “The economics are sound,” he wrote. He argued that Sony’s problem has been its messaging and its failure to give players a proper way off physical media.
