Fountains adds its PC boss-rush Gauntlet mode on Xbox shortly after console launch

The post-game mode sends players through all ten of the soulslike's bosses in a row, plus the Shattered Shape expansion bosses for owners of the DLC.

Crunching Koalas has released the Gauntlet update for its soulslike action-RPG Fountains on Xbox, according to an Xbox Wire post published October 20. The post-game challenge mode was first built for the PC version and is coming to Xbox not long after the game’s console premiere.

Xbox Wire describes the mode as a test for players looking for more difficulty after finishing the story, calling it a place for the “most demanding souls-like connoisseurs.”

To get in, players have to beat the final boss first. Then they talk to a new NPC, a keeper who looks like a medieval gauntlet. The mode puts all ten of the game’s bosses back to back, and each victory sends the player straight to the next arena. If you own the Shattered Shape expansion, you can pick a version of the Gauntlet that adds that DLC’s bosses.

Players keep their equipment and can bring consumables. Rest areas come after the third, sixth and ninth fights, where players can refill healing flasks and change gear before moving on. The tenth fight is against the final boss of the main game. Any consumables used during a run are given back when it ends, and players can repeat the mode as often as they want.

The developers suggest using runs to try out builds and bringing several loadouts to swap at rest areas, since different bosses call for different approaches.

Fountains is set in one large, interconnected dungeon with metroidvania-style exploration. It also has adjustable difficulty and an online message system that lets players leave hints for each other. The Xbox store listing in the post gives a price of $14.99. Xbox Wire also says Fountains: Extended Edition, which bundles the base game and the DLC, is currently 20% off.
