Helldivers 2 swaps GameGuard for Easy Anti-Cheat to target cheat mods

Arrowhead says the change is meant to protect the Galactic War from cheats, though some harmless cosmetic mods may stop working until their creators update them.

Arrowhead is replacing GameGuard with Easy Anti-Cheat in Helldivers 2 as part of a push against cheat mods, according to Rock Paper Shotgun. The outlet reports the switch is scheduled for today, October 20.

In a post announcing the change, which Rock Paper Shotgun quotes, the studio admitted its earlier anti-cheat setup fell short: “The implementation of GameGuard for Helldivers 2 wasn’t as effective as it could have been.” Arrowhead called Easy Anti-Cheat, which is owned by Epic, an industry standard used in more than 200 games. It said it expects the software to better protect fair play and the Galactic War, the game’s shared ongoing campaign.

The studio also said it will add more security tools on top of Easy Anti-Cheat to make it more effective and improve protection of the game’s integrity.

Arrowhead said it is targeting mods that give players unfair advantages or harm other people’s games, not mods in general. The studio said it values cosmetic and non-gameplay mods that don’t affect other players. It warned, however, that mods affecting other players may stop working, and that “some non-malicious cosmetic mods may require updates” from their creators before they work again.

Players who think the new anti-cheat is wrongly blocking a harmless mod or other software can contact Arrowhead’s support team through Zendesk, the studio said.

Rock Paper Shotgun pointed out that Easy Anti-Cheat is already used in games such as Elden Ring, Fortnite, Rust and Gears of War: E-Day.
